See the Small Town of Serowe on a Botswana Safari

This small, sprawling town makes a fantastic side trip to any Botswana safari holiday, and is a must-see destination to any visitor who wishes to learn more about Botswana's culture and history. Serowe was the birthplace of Sir Seretse Khama, the first president and founding father of Botswana who famously returned to his homeland from his studies in the UK along with an English bride - much of the controversy caused by the interracial marriage that played out in the aftermath of this took place in Serowe. You can still visit the couple's graves in the royal cemetery today. Serowe is the perfect destination to take it easy and enjoy a break from the wilderness of your Botswana safari adventure, and to just wonder around soaking up the atmosphere and the history.

The Okavango Delta

Generally renowned as housing one of Africa's most breathtaking selections of wildlife as well as stunning scenery, the Okavango is the world's only inland delta and a land of dramatic flood plains, palm-fringed islands and the mighty rushing river. If you possibly can, time your Botswana safari holiday with the Okavango's annual flood, which arrives each May and makes this piece of land the destination of choice from mass migrations of animals from all over the Kalahari. The floods not only ensure that you're guaranteed to good game viewing, but also create a stunning watery landscape in their own right, dotted with lily pads and ripe for bird watching.

The Kalahari

The Kalahari must be seen to be believed - it really is the jewel in Botswana's crown. Luckily, as it covers an impressive 85% of the country's land mass, it's hardly difficult to find, and so is a must for any Botswana safari itinerary. Throw away any preconceived notions you had about deserts, as this is no dusty, barren landscape; instead a visit to the Kalahari will introduce you to rolling grasslands, luscious flood plains and a unique geography that will take your breath away, filled with sandy rock ridges, roaming herds of cattle and exotic flora. However, easy as it is the wax lyrical about the Kalahari's environment, what really hits you is the sense of space, and the wide open, stretching sky just begging for some night time star gazing. Whilst you're here, you can pay a cultural visit to the indigenous Bushmen who've lived on these plains for over 20,000 years - theirs is a fascinating way of life, and well worth trying to learn more about. Interacting with the locals is a valuable part of any Botswana safari holiday.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17019761659897501607noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223658730457514523.post-74065164216005914512013-04-09T00:04:00.000-07:002013-04-21T00:04:55.197-07:00Three Incredible Cities Found on the Yangtze River

At a length of almost 4,000 miles, the Yangtze River stands as the longest waterway across the whole of Asia and the third longest in the world - beaten only by the Amazon and the Nile. Flowing from the glaciers of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau before emptying into the East China Sea in Shanghai, it has been a longstanding hotspot among those looking to experience unbelievable river cruises. For those hoping to take to the waters in the near future, here are some of the best cities you can experience on your trip.

We begin our journey at Lijiang, a city which offers a stunning example of traditional life in China. One of the highlights which often draws visitors is the Old Town of Lijiang, a UNESCO protected site which demonstrates the historical architecture commonly found across China throughout history, also boasting an ancient water-supply system which is still fully operational to this day.

Another popular sight is Yichang, a modern metropolis which is filled with history spanning hundreds of years. Formerly known as Yiling, one of the most prominent early moments recorded here was when the Qin general Bai Qi set fire to the city back in 278BC, during the Warring States period. The city was also an important site during the Three Kingdoms period, standing as the location of the Battle of Yiling in 222AD. The modern day Yichang has grown into a sizeable city, being the second largest in the Hubei province and home to the China Three Gorges University.

We finish our cruise where the Yangtze meets the ocean, with the powerhouse of Shanghai offering the perfect goodbye to the river. The largest city in China and the largest city by population on the planet, Shanghai is the home to more than 23 million people and is now a fantastic cultural metropolis. With such a fine myriad of restaurants found across the city, Shanghai is the perfect location to explore Chinese cuisine at its finest. Culture vultures should be sure to head to the city's museum, which has thousands of objects on display to help you get a sense of the 5,000 years of history this great nation boasts.

Those are some of the most popular sights which can be discovered on Yangtze river cruises, but this guide hardly scratches the surface of the incredible experiences this waterway holds. Why not book a cruise today and explore the wonders of the Yangtze river for yourself?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17019761659897501607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223658730457514523.post-19861031195481993982013-03-28T01:07:00.000-07:002013-04-21T01:07:50.247-07:00Bringing the Kids to Costa Rica

Children to Costa Rica

Our family returned from another incredible vacation week. If you're planning a family adventure Costa Rica can be forgotten as a destination location. We love the country and bringing the children makes it that much more enjoyable.

Costa Rica is relatively inexpensive, especially if compared to Hawaii or Cabo, its 'centrally' located so flights from anywhere in the US are less than six hours, you're on the beach less than 2 hours after landing in San Jose, and its an incredible country to bring kids of all ages.

We primarily stay in or near the town of Playa Hermosa, 5 minutes south of the more popular town of Jaco, is where we often stay. All the condo's are virtually on the water and your close enough to be near all that Jaco offers without the relative crowds.

There are plenty of great family tours all located within an hour drive or less from Playa Hermosa. We will detail each tour in coming blogs but as an overview your group can experience large crocodiles being fed a few feet from your boat, an amazing butterfly tour that excites kids of all ages, the world-famous ZipLine (aka Canopy Tour) that sends you hundreds of feet across and above the jungle, and the amazing Manual Antonio national park where you come up close and personal on your short hike to white sand beaches with sloths, monkeys, iguanas and more.

Motorcycle riding is drew us to this county; we ride with a motorycle tour company, and have toured the country on dirt bikes; our love for the country and the people grew from there. While we don't ride as often, we now bring our kids and enjoy more family time. While there are more families taking vacations to Costa Rica is it surprising to talk with our friends and never hear Costa Rica mentioned as a 'family trip' location.

Within an hour of Jaco/Playa Hermosa kids can do the world-famous Canopy Tour (aka ZipLine Tour), feed monkey's on the sands of the Pacific, ride in a (stable!) boat to watch live crocodile feeding, view thousands of unique butterflies in the Butterfly Farm, go horsebacking and more. Costa Rica, from the jungles to the beaches ensures a lifetime of family memories.

If you have not checked out Costa Rica, check it out! Affortable, beautiful, numerous wildlife and activities. Yes, it's and ideal destination to bring the kids...

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17019761659897501607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223658730457514523.post-46015380262937192432013-03-26T01:16:00.000-07:002013-04-21T01:16:17.717-07:00Cuba - A Birdwatcher's Paradise

Cuba has so many beautiful birds, many of them unavailable to see in their natural habitat anywhere else in the world. The Cuban government has made concerted efforts over the years to preserve wildlife habitats, even before the current environmental movement made it politically popular. Because of those efforts, Cuba has preserved much of its wildlife in the unspoiled, natural beauty in which it thrives.

One of the more colorful birds you will see on your visit is the Cuban Grassquit, a tanager that is related to Darwin's finches. These birds live in lowland forests and tropical or subtropical dry shrubland. You may not have to travel far to see one as they are very common in Cuba. They are hostile toward other birds of the same species or who share the same colors of plumage. Male Grassquits are easily recognizable by their black mask, the black patch on their breast and a yellow-orange collar that extends to just behind their eyes. Their crowns and bellies are gray, creating a pleasing contrast. The females are basically a faded version of the male. Although not a threatened species their numbers have been decimated by trappers who sell them as caged birds. They are marketed as the "Cuban Finch" and are quite popular all over the world.

The Black-cowled Oriole is not exclusive to Cuba, although they are quite common there. They have a wide range that extends throughout the Americas so you can see them in Canada or South America as well as in Cuba. The male is quite colorful, notable for the blue area at the base of his lower beak. Black wings and a black breast show off the bright yellow of their back and belly feathers and if you get to see one in flight you'll notice the bright yellow feathers on the underside of its tail. They like to build their nests in palm trees from palm frond fibers; the nests look as if they will fall at the first gentle breeze but are actually quite sturdy and well attached, resembling a small hammock.

Crested Caracara-open lowlands and sometimes in forests and marches. Found mostly in the southern United States, Central and South America, and Cuba. 19-23" long with a 4 food wing span, they can weigh up to 4 pounds depending on where the live and the variety and availability of food. The Crested Caracara is a carrion feeder, part of Nature's sanitation team, but will also eat small animals, fish, reptiles, insects, and worms. They have no compunctions about stealing food from other birds or devouring other birds' babies in their nests. Part of the falcon family, they have distinctive hooked beaks that are gray at the tip and orange around the middle, extending to a black crown that tops white neck feathers. Their body feathers are black and when in flight their wings are tipped in white; their tail feathers are white with black barring. Part of the falcon family, you can also see them walking or running on the ground as frequently as you see them in flight.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17019761659897501607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223658730457514523.post-77519884642550553112013-03-10T01:14:00.000-08:002013-04-21T01:14:42.032-07:00To Conquer Mount Kinabalu

I have wanted to climb Mount Kinabalu in Sabah. Finally the
opportunity arose and I boarded a flight to Kota Kinabalu with my other
friends and an equal measure of excitement and trepidation. As ever, the
flight was comfortable and timely, delivering us to Kota Kinabalu early
in the afternoon with plenty of time to make the two-hour drive up to
the Kinabalu Park headquarters. As we approached, in heavy rain, to
Malaysia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, I got my first glimpse of
the great mountain, with the grey rocks of the summit rising
majestically from the lush green forest below, teasing us from behind
the clouds. We spent the night in the park and awoke the next morning to
a brilliant blue sky filled with sunshine. Weather like that never
fails to lighten my step, no matter how many I needed to take.

My
group set off from Timpohon Gate at 8.00 a.m. The fresh air and cool
temperature were a joy. I found the trail well maintained, and the
combination of markers at every 500 metres and regularly spaced rest
huts meant that I always knew how much progress I was making. It was a
six kilometre trek to the Laban Rata resthouse, where we spent half the
night before making the final push for the summit. The last leg - about
1.4 km - didn't sound far but was, in fact, quite a challenge! Whilst
there was plenty to look at - the occasional, breathtaking views across
the lowlands, the forest, fellow climbers and, porters passing with gas
canisters, cases of canned drinks and trays of eggs strapped to their
backs - the trail did become a slog and the air got noticeably thinner.

Just
short of five hours after setting off, we reached Laban Rata and what a
treat that was - sitting out on the terrace, above the clouds in the
blinding sunshine, boots off, aching legs but with all-round
exhilaration! Aside from adjusting to the altitude and soaking in the
view, which got even better at sunset. There wasn't much to do up there.
But the time passed quickly, and at around 3.00 a.m., it was time to
depart the resthouse.

Setting out in the dark was the part I had
been most nervous about but it was fine. The sky was clear and the stars
were spectacular; it made me realise how much artificial light pollutes
the cityscape. Once we were up on the plateau, walking became easier;
the enormous slabs of granite provided good grip. As the sky began to
lighten and the different peaks emerged from the darkness, I reached the
last 200 metres of the ascent to Low's Peak. It could not have been
timed better. The orange rays of the rising sun filled the sky as we
queued for photographs on the summit of Malaysia's highest peak at
4,095m. The area is remarkably small, and with 147 climbers reaching the
top in close succession, all eager to get their photograph, there was a
great need to keep ones' patience!

Descending to Laban Rata was
fabulous as we could see all that had been hidden in the darkness on the
way up. We were presented with endless views of Kota Kinabalu and out
to sea, the rocky outcrops of the plateau and the beautiful alpine
vegetation below. Enroute, we stopped at Laban Rata for a second
breakfast and to pick up the gear we temporarily discarded from our
packs for the final climb.

There was no getting away from it but
the long walk back to the gate was the hardest. It felt like the best
part was now behind me. The exhilaration I felt on the summit lasted
only a while and, as my knees started to ache with the force of walking
down the steps, it became a mental challenge to continue putting one
foot in front of the other. Almost four hours later, we finally arrived
at the gate. We collected our certificates from the park headquarters
and left the place exhausted but ecstatic over our achievement.

Back
home looking at the photographs, the trip is almost dream-like. It far
exceeded my expectations - the weather, the organisation, the
camaraderie of a big group and the feeling of achievement. The
experience will live with me forever! Would I do it again? Definitely!
Should you do it? Absolutely! One of life's great experience is at your
doorstep, what are you waiting for?

To say that Cancun would be a vacation of a lifetime can be a bit deceiving, because chances are that you will repeat and keep coming back several times. The Mexican beaches in the area are amongst the best in the world, and all the additional activities you could do make it a very unique destination. That said, you could make your Cancun trip a lot better (yes it is possible) if you decided to splurge a bit and go for one of the following top resorts in the Riviera Maya.

Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach

There are many things which make the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Resort one of the top places to stay in Cancun and anywhere in the world for that matter. Everything about this place is designed to be luxurious and spectacular. The view from the room was as good as the room inside. Every room has an ocean view which is something everyone wants on a beach vacation. The Resort is perfect for business conventions and families alike. If you like golf then you will enjoy the complimentary green fees at the championship golf course nearby. Some of the activities you will be able to enjoy besides the beach include scuba diving, golf, tennis, theatres and museums, fine dining, fitness center, spa, and child programs.

InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort

The InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort is a recipient of the 4 diamond award by Triple A and when you walk in you know just why. A recent 15 million dollar investment made what was already a fantastic destination even better. The Fitness Center is now one of the best you will ever use, and the beach is simply amazing. The retreat beach in front of the resort was called one of the best in the world by the Discovery Channel. The amenities at the resort include the wonderful beach, golf, hiking, great pools, boating, beach massages, great dining and shopping very nearby.

Ritz Carlton Cancun

Some people say that it can be difficult to relax in such a vibrant beach destination as Cancun, but those people probably never stayed at the Ritz Carlton Cancun. Every little detail is taken care of at this great resort so that you have one of the best trips in your life. From the giant stained glass dome to the beautiful views you will have a hard time frowning at this award winning resort. Besides the usual amenities, the Ritz Carlton Cancun resort will also give you access to water skiing, wind surfing, scuba diving etc. Child programs are also available so the whole family can enjoy the vacation.

ME Hotel Cancun

ME Hotel in Cancun is probably the best one for the younger crowds and singles. The night scene at the Rende Gerber's Rose Bar is some of the best that you will find in the entire Riviera Maya. Make sure to also check out the adult-oriented "The Level" while you are there. If you would like a pre-tuned iPod or a private Jacuzzi just tell the staff and they will be happy to oblige. There is an adults' only pool and an infinity pool you have to check while you are there.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17019761659897501607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223658730457514523.post-29960486933771796382013-02-24T01:11:00.000-08:002013-04-21T01:12:19.627-07:00Travel and Living in Colombia: Honey, Look What's Crossing the Road

Danger: Gecarcinus ruricola Ahead

"What's that?" I asked my wife.

"What?"

"Look ahead there. Can you see that?"

"I see it. What are they?" She asked staring more closely at the crawling masses in front of us.

Hordes of something moving littered the road. I realized what they were and hit the brakes.

The SUV had an anti-skid braking system. So when I slammed on the brakes in disbelief of what we saw in front of us, I didn't lose control. There were hundreds of them. They crawled slowly, almost in unison, in their annual migration across the main coast road to the waiting waves of the sea. Many would meet the jaws of hungry predators. Whether to lay eggs or to escape rain-flooded burrows, they swarmed across the blacktop en masse. In places, it's a mere forty yards or so which must be traversed by the migratory decapods. The annual crossing is both a blessing and curse for residents of the San Andres Islands of Colombia. The three islands, San Andres, Providence and Santa Catalina, experience a similar inundation of the Black land crab known as Gecarcinus ruricola each year. During the April to June migration period, if a heavy rain falls, the affected streets and roads may become impassible for days due to the sheer numbers of crustaceans blanketing the asphalt in their tirade to the Caribbean Sea.

Travel and Living in Colombia

There are many facets to travel and living in Colombia. Among those is a grand variety of foods based on regional tastes. What Colombians eat in one region of the country may be vastly different to local fare in other regions. Even adjoining regions may have few commonalities. But when you travel from the Colombian mainland halfway across the Caribbean, you should expect a completely new venue of foods and staples. Luckily, you won't be disappointed. The archipelago of San Andres, with its cadre of three islands lies about 200 kilometers off the coast of Nicaragua in the Caribbean Sea. As one might expect, local fare is based on seafood of many types which is available cheaply year-round. While a plethora of salt water species abound as table fare, it's the annual migration of land crabs which precipitate a regional specialty - Black Crab Soup. You can get Black crabs for the soup almost all year except for the banned egg-laying period from April first to June first when harvesting them is prohibited. "Other times of year they're really cheap and lots of families make crab soup" says Sonia Harrington, a local cook known for her crab soup among numerous other island specialty dishes.

San Andres Island Crab Soup

A virtual smorgasbord of fresh ingredients the soup is slow-cooked in a large pot over a wood fire, typically outdoors, weather permitting. While she refused to divulge the complete recipe for her Black crab soup version, the essential ingredients were fresh staples including:

- potatoes

- sweet potatoes

- onions

- green plantain

- green peppers

- pork stock

- a combination of locally available herbs and spices

- salted pig tail, and of course,

- fresh Black crabs

She placed a large serving bowl full of the soup in front of me. Just the aroma drove my senses wild.

"Where are the smaller bowls for each person?" I asked.

"No, that bowl is just for you" she answered smiling.

Looking down at an ocean of thick rich soup, I thought, "There's no way I can eat all this". I thanked her and dug in. After nearly an hour I gave up. All that remained were a few pieces of plantain. I surprised myself but was as stuffed as a Thanksgiving Turkey. The soup was that good.

Another San Andres Archipelago Specialty

Another peculiar specialty developing in San Andes and Providence is fresh cooked Lionfish or Pterois (Pterois radiata, Pterois volitans or Pterois miles). Often seen as an aquarium species, the beautiful, delicate-looking but deadly Lionfish is making an entrance as a gourmet dish available in the Pacific and the Caribbean. Its spines are highly venomous and its venom painful to endure, but it is flavorful and unique as a dining experience.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17019761659897501607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223658730457514523.post-49214947299769316912013-02-22T00:01:00.000-08:002013-04-21T00:02:08.012-07:00The Most Useful Language When Traveling to Asia

From personal experience the most useful language when traveling in Asia is Japanese. When I was visiting South Korea, I was denied entry at a restaurant by a nervous waitress who told me that she wasn't able to serve me for fear of a lack of communication, and that if my only language was English she would not be able to serve me.

It was because I was able to speak, read, and write in Japanese that she allowed me to be seated and served. I was able to read, understand, and order off the menu smoothly and without any problems. In fact the service they provided to me was excellent, as well as the food. I dined alone, but enjoyed myself immensely and was treated royally.

Nine hundred million people from all over the world speak, or have some command of the English language. English is the language of business and commerce in Asia, it is also the language of Hollywood with its movies and music. English is versatile, dynamic, and cool. In Asia, Asian businessmen and merchants want to be seen and heard using English. It's a social status issue. If you are able to speak English fluently, you are seen as highly educated, refined, and modern thinking.

However, when it comes to traveling and dealing with local merchants the Japanese language tends to be one of the more popular languages to converse in. This could be because many Asian countries were former colonies of the Empire of Japan and Japanese was forced upon the locals. When Japan reemerged as an economic world power the popularity of Japanese took off and became necessary to learn as many Asians flocked to Japan to either live or seek a new life. Speaking English is more about appearing cool and fashionable whereas learning Japanese is a matter of survival.

In Japan there's Wasaeigo. In Singapore we have Singlish, and so on. These are heavily modified forms of the English language which often times irritate native English speakers. Wasaeigo ( Japanese-English) (Singlish-Singaporean-English) often use broken and inflected and sometimes confuses North American English speakers. The interesting thing here is that in countries like Singapore, China, and Korea the Japanese language is rarely ever butchered, reinvented, or misspoken. It is always clear and respectful.

If you are planning a trip to Asia and are not sure which language is best to learn, I recommend learning Japanese. If learning languages is not something you are interested in doing, English should suffice most of the time, especially in major cities with lots of touristy areas.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17019761659897501607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223658730457514523.post-14673818595843977162013-02-05T23:59:00.000-08:002013-04-20T23:59:49.779-07:00A Rain Forest Adventure on St Lucia

St. Lucia, located in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean, offers a tropical escape unlike any other. A yacht charter to the island will almost certainly result in exciting adventures with memories to last a lifetime. One attraction that is drawing quite a response from the more daring crowd is Rainforest Adventures. You've seen St. Lucia from the viewpoint of the Caribbean, as it rises out of the blue to the peak of Mount Gimie, now you can gain a whole new perspective as you journey into the rainforest canopy and witness the color and life of St. Lucia from an aerial vantage point.

Rainforest Adventures St. Lucia offer a variety of tours to meet everyone's level of interest and excitement, including zip lines, birding tours, hiking trails, and a unique rainforest aerial tram. The open-air gondolas carry guests out of the lowlands and into the ecological park of the island's forest reserve. The views of flora and fauna will astound you and a trained guide will point out wonders and answer questions. Bird watching tours are ideal for wildlife enthusiasts and serious birders alike. The tour begins at the break of dawn and nature guides will help you recognize native and migratory birds by sound and sight.

Has it ever happened that you go to a backpacking trip with all kinds of equipment packed in your backpack? Getting a water thermos, sleeping bag, some food and a good backpack to put them all inside and start the trip. It is spring after all and a good opportunity to walk into the nature and discover some fun.

Beside all the above equipment, you might also need a flashlight, receiving radio set, watch, compass, map and some other tools. These instruments are really useful in trips. But the troubles just start here; insufficient backpack space and lifting these many objects for a long distance walking. These things may turn the sweetness of the trip into bitterness.

Well, not if we had a multi-tool all-in-one space saving gadget like the Swiss knife which has all the handy tools like: spoon, fork, can opener, etc. Swiss knife is really a cool stuff, but it does not have the entire necessary instruments we need in a trip, like flashlight, map, radio receiver, compass, etc. What could we do then? Should we deny taking all those necessary stuff with us? Or is there a workaround to this? Well actually there IS a workaround to this and there is a Swiss knife for those of kinds of things and that's what we recommend to you:

An Android Gadget, with great Android Widgets and Apps

Android Gadgets, a Digital Swiss Knife For Trips

Android gadgets (smartphones and tablets), nowadays, have developed in a way which can fulfill lots of our requirements and needs and they are turned actually into handy tools. These tools come in handy especially in a backpacking trip. In the following you will see what an Android gadget could do for us in a long or short distance journey.

Google Map: Map is what you will use a lot in trips. Now instead of taking a paper map, you can use your gadget's Google Map to see not only a specific region map, but the whole world in details. You can use the Latitude or Direction feature in Google Map to easily find your friends or to find the best route to a specific point on the map along with amount of time required to get there by bus, bicycle, and car or even by foot.

Compass: Compass is one of the earliest equipment to find the north magnetic pole and one of the oldest tools for navigations. Android comes with an internal compass which helps you find your destination easily. This way, using the Android's compass, you will not have the problem of electromagnetic interference anymore. Most of Android gadgets today DO have compass, if yours doesn't, you can use the Google Map's inner compass to find the north magnetic pole. There are also some compass-based applications and widget for Android which is quite useful.

Watch: Obviously watch is one of the important tools used everywhere. In trips, you can use it define the journey duration, rest time, appointment time with fellows, etc. Android clock widget will help you do all that stuff plus a few more. You can set alarms to wake up in the specific time or use the chronometer to measure the time more accurately.

Flashlight: If you plan to stay for night in a trip, or to walk into creepy dark places, like caves, you will certainly need a flashlight. Using special Android applications and widgets, you can use the camera LED as a Flashlight tool and stay out of darkness! Besides, you can use the LED to call for a SOS in emergency cases. In SOS mode, the LED flash regularly turns on and off.

Radio Set: A small receiving radio set helps you know weather conditions (for this case you may need a Weather Widget or App), natural events and local news. For example if a road is blocked due to landslides, you can get notified quickly via a radio. Today most phones have internal FM radio and Android gadgets are not exception. So you don't need to carry a separate radio and a pair of batteries if you use an Android smartphone.

MP3 Player: As mentioned for the Radio, you do not need to carry a separate MP3 Player with a set of hands free in trips if you have an Android gadget.

Photographing: We all love to take some photos with those alligators in the river. No need to carry extra equipment and go heavy. Use your Android gadget to do so.

Mosquito net: Android has something to say in this field too. If you plan to stay for night, you can use special Android applications to protect yourself against mosquitos and other insects, and thus against the diseases they may carry.

So you see how an Android gadget could be a Swiss Knife. A Swiss knife to save lot of space and lots of energy! Note that, thanks to the Android Widgets, you could have access to all of them right from your home screen. Android Clock Widgets, Weather Widgets are the most popular ones.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17019761659897501607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223658730457514523.post-50799643838074584352013-01-13T01:09:00.000-08:002013-04-21T01:10:16.676-07:00If You Want to Catch an Iguana Do Not Grab It By the Tail

How to Catch an Iguana

"Hurry, come and help us."

"What happened?"

"There's an animal."

"What animal? Where?"

We plunged headlong towards my sister-in-law's room. She stood by the foot of her bed staring at the night table in front of her.

"What is it?"

"It's an Iguana. A big one."

"Where is it?"

"Under the night table. Look, there's the tail."

It sure was. A loop of striped green and black tail extended from under the side of the night table. I figured about an 18-inch long beastie was hiding at the end of it. I reached down, grabbed the tail as close to the front as I could. Then I learned an important lesson.

If you want to catch an Iguana do not grab it by the tail.

The Green Iguana

The Green Iguana (Iguana iguana rhinolopha) has a habitat range from the southern regions of the USA south through most of Central and South America down to Brazil and Paraguay. They also inhabit many of the Caribbean Islands. Green Iguanas are easily identified by their green to dull brown colored body with a black and green or brown striped tail which extends roughly twice the length of its main body. There are spines along their back extending from the top of the head above the nose down to the length of the tail. Great climbers and fast runners, they have five long, slender toes on each foot with sharp, curved nails which can sink into wood and plastic or grip rough surfaces. If you are deeply scratched by one, heavy bleeding and an infection are almost imminent. Their short, sharp teeth can deliver a painful bite.

Primarily regarded as herbivorous eaters, in some situations they've also been known to feed on a variety of insects and small creatures. Fruit and vegetable scraps, corn and fleshy plants and leaves make up much of its diet. Larger adult iguanas may hiss or make clicking sounds when angered, disturbed, cornered or attempting to attract a mate. Females tend to be much smaller but less brightly colored than males. In the spring, female iguanas lay an average of 25 to thirty or more white, leathery-shelled eggs which are about an inch and a half long.

Iguana: A Delicious but Controlled Species

While in many regions of its habitat Green Iguanas are a controlled species, they are also quite tasty when cooked and are common table fare in some Caribbean Islands. The red meat has a mild taste and smooth texture. In case you're wondering, no, It does not taste like chicken. Often it is cooked in soups or stews. When available, the eggs are also steamed whole in the shell or placed in the simmering stew to cook. Where popular in heavily populated areas, there are strict controls on the harvesting of iguanas as food. The eggs command an especially lofty price due to their once-per-year scarcity but a large adult can fetch a hefty fee. Upwards of twenty five to forty dollars or more for an egg-bearing adult female are common. Live adult males of one meter (three feet) or more in length weighing in the neighborhood of five kilos (seven or eight pounds) will likewise sell quickly. The species has reportedly reached up to six and a half feet in length (two meters) with weights exceeding twenty pounds (9 kilos).

Finally Catching a Meter-Long Lizard

"Bring me my towel" I asked while surveying the situation.

I had grabbed the tail up close to where I thought the body would be, planning to lift the night stand then haul the captured beastie out from under it. That's when the iguana played her trump card. The tail thrashing and wriggling frantically, broke off just above where I gripped it. The lizard then bolted past me sliding under the bed. I uttered an expletive, then carried the wriggling tail out of the room to the squeals of onlookers.

"It's alive! It's alive!" they shrieked in unison. I didn't bother to explain that this was an ordinary reflex action of the reptile's nervous system.

Minutes later, corralled and its vision shut off by the cloth over its eyes and head, it was pinned between a night table and the wall. Thusly wrapped, plucking the four pound female swollen with eggs, from its position was easy. Its legs tied to immobilize the thrashing lizard, it went into a five gallon bucket along with the still-wriggling tail, until we could figure out what to do with it. I was especially wary of the fearsome inch-long claws and the gaping mouth with its rows of needle-sharp teeth.

So just remember, if you want to catch an Iguana, do not grab it by the tail.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17019761659897501607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223658730457514523.post-73427402161834168872013-01-08T23:57:00.000-08:002013-04-20T23:58:03.927-07:00Gifts for Guys: Don't Even Think About Flowers and Chocolates

Parents, schools or caretakers offer it in some parts of the world to educate the children, who are stepping into their adolescence. If formally received, sex education is either taught as a full course at high school or junior high school level or in biology, health, home economics classes. Teaching sex education is rather a controversial issue; debates have been going on for several decades discussing if it should be taught formally in schools or not. Sex education in schools should exist without any doubts and apprehensions as it offers many benefits.

Adolescence is called the "age of storm and stress". The young teenagers, during this phase of life are under deep psychological pressure. Mainly, this psychological pressure is the result of one's growing sexual needs and the biological changes and hormonal effects on the individuals. During this time, most of the children are observed to become easily irritable. They find it difficult in most situations to deal with the family members. They might not want to talk to them about the natural changes taking place in their body and mind. In such circumstances, one highly suitable option is that of the teachers who are able to teach them to control their urges until a proper age. In schools, trained teachers would help the students to know how to deal with their sexual impulses. This role can not be replaced by parents or other entities. A classroom discussion and lesson would make them feel it is natural, and they would also feel that they are being understood by someone. However, taking them individually to psychologists or other trained educators would not help. In such a situation they might consider themselves to be different and misunderstood by family and people around them. Therefore, it becomes crystal clear that the best way to offer sex education is always in school.

It is a psychological phenomenon that children at young age are under an immense peer pressure. Something that they learn in the class with their peer group is what makes a better impression on their minds than otherwise. They are more focused in the lessons that teachers offer and are more eager asking question to clear their ambiguities. They might feel embarrassed and uneasy questioning their parents about it, but it always differs in case of the teacher in the class. This is because everyone in the class is going through the same stage. A class discussion becomes healthy source of learning as it helps in enhancing the knowledge on the subject.

Many people advocate that sex education should only be restricted to families, that is, that parents should personally educate their children. This view is totally illogical and holds complications and questions. The first point is that not all the parents would be willing to do it or would be able to do it. Secondly, this education needs a proper channel through which it should reach its required learners. There could be many possible problems in the families so they might not be able to take the role of a teacher in educating their children regarding sex. The demand of annulment of sex education from the schools is highly conservative.

Most importantly, there are many single parents, how would they take up this challenge of educating their children on their own? Parents can not properly educate their children about sex also because they lack details that qualified sex educators convey in schools. Thus, the stance of abolishing sex education in school is not a favorable thought. In many observed cases where parents or children are embarrassed about talking over sexual matters with each other, it is most likely to be uneasy situation at both the ends. This keeps the children from learning the answers to the questions they might have in their minds. This can be a great flaw of shifting the duty of sexual education from teachers to the parents. It will leave the children only half or less educated about the issue and as they say "Little knowledge is a dangerous thing", this might end up in grave situations.

According to research, most of the parents also feel uneasy because they know that they are not equipped to provide the apt sexual information to their children. They also fail to comprehend what details and information should be concealed and what should be revealed, keeping in mind their children's age. On the other hand, there might also be parents who would feel comfortable talking to their children about sexual matters, but only when the children bring the matter up.

Most parents, around the world, may also lack role models to look up to as they would not have talked over sexual issues with their own parents in their adolescent. This makes them inefficient to trigger their roles of educating their children in an effective way as the assigned teachers are able to do in schools.

Sex education is not limited to only a single branch of knowledge. This education focuses on a number of significant sexual matters that are offered with especially designed courses and programs. Sex education covers the education of relationships, sexual abstinence at a certain level and teaching to practice safe sex to the level of children who are thought to be sexually active. Therefore, its claim for being appropriate and guiding holds strong base.

At a certain age of adolescence, growing children have problems facing relationships and controlling their personal emotions. Conflicts related to such matters persuade many youngsters to commit suicides or take part in other immoral activities. Proper sex education in schools also concentrates in making the youngsters emotionally stronger and in educating ways to cope with relationship problems. This argument strongly shows the immense benefit of sex education in schools.

Sex education is an important health strategy and this cannot be denied. AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases can only be controlled if people are aware of precautions and have a vast knowledge in this case. This knowledge is conveyed through sex education, and if sex education is banned in schools and if parents have to educate their children, then it would not be as beneficial to the individuals and the society on the whole as teaching in school could be.

Sex education does not exist in all parts of the world. Asians are commonly regarded conservative when compared to westerners. It is not a part of their course in schools; this does not in any way mean that their teenage pregnancy rate is any lower if they are not exposed to sexual matters openly. In fact, this is one way how peers can mislead most of the youngsters and persuade them to bask in young age sexual relationships without any attempts for safety. This has resulted in serious problems such as the spread of fatal diseases like AIDS and has also increased rate of illegitimate births.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
